On April 18, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to discuss industrial and information technology developments in the first quarter. Smart manufacturing is the core technology and guiding principle for transforming China's manufacturing sector from large to strong and is also a critical task in advancing new industrialization. Shan Zhongde, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, stated:
"We aim to develop smart manufacturing processes, equipment, products, and software systems, promoting breakthroughs in technologies such as industrial robots, intelligent inspection equipment, and additive manufacturing tools. The scale of China's smart manufacturing equipment industry has already exceeded 3.2 trillion yuan."
The Backbone of Manufacturing: Smart Equipment
Equipment manufacturing serves as the backbone of the broader manufacturing sector, with intelligent equipment and manufacturing representing the future direction of its development. Smart manufacturing equipment is applied across various industries and stages within manufacturing, and its level of advancement reflects a country's capacity for innovation and overall industrial strength.
Compared to traditional manufacturing tools, smart manufacturing equipment integrates cutting-edge technologies such as intelligent sensing, advanced control, artificial intelligence, and digital twins. This fusion endows the equipment with capabilities like information perception, analysis, planning, error correction, network integration, and self-diagnosis and repair. These features significantly enhance processing quality and efficiency while reducing costs. Beyond functioning as standalone machines, smart manufacturing equipment forms the foundation for automated and intelligent production lines, digital workshops, and smart factories.
Challenges in Developing Smart Manufacturing Equipment
The "12th Five-Year Development Plan for the Smart Manufacturing Equipment Industry" outlines that, by 2010, revenue from industrial automation control systems, instruments, CNC machines, industrial robots, and related systems had surpassed 300 billion yuan. However, as an emerging industry still in its developmental stages, China's smart manufacturing equipment sector faces significant challenges, including:
Weak innovation capabilities: Reliance on foreign core technologies, such as advanced sensors and control systems.
Small-scale industries: Dispersed and underdeveloped industrial structures, lacking globally competitive enterprises.
Underdeveloped foundation: Limited market share for high-end sensors, intelligent instruments, advanced CNC systems, and robots—accounting for less than 5%.
The Need for Intelligent Transformation
China's diminishing demographic dividend and rising labor costs highlight the urgent need for manufacturing enterprises to undergo intelligent transformation. As the sector grapples with challenges such as large scale but limited strength, vanishing labor advantages, and increasing costs, adopting smart manufacturing is the inevitable path to transformation. Automation and efficiency improvements are essential to reduce costs, enhance productivity, and ensure sustainable growth.
Policy Support and Regional Advances
With strong policy backing and growing market demand, four major industrial clusters—around the Bohai Sea, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and central-western regions—are driving advancements in smart manufacturing. Domestic companies have made significant breakthroughs in areas such as industrial robots, machine vision, and specialized intelligent equipment, launching numerous products with proprietary intellectual property. These achievements have reached international standards in performance and quality.
Additionally, the transformation of China's manufacturing industry has spurred demand for high-quality, high-performance smart manufacturing equipment, creating substantial opportunities for domestic alternatives. This accelerates localization and supports the sector's overall upgrade.
Future Trends in Smart Manufacturing
The smart manufacturing equipment industry is poised for robust growth, with key trends including:
Greater emphasis on technological innovation and faster localization processes.
A rise in customized production models tailored to specific needs.
Smart production becoming a core driving force, with a focus on green and sustainable practices.
As global manufacturing continues to evolve, smart manufacturing equipment will play an increasingly pivotal role in driving economic growth and improving societal productivity.
