In industrial production, especially for electronic devices used outdoors, different levels of dustproof and waterproof protection are required. In fields such as equipment manufacturing, particularly for weaponry operating in harsh environments, the protection requirements are even more stringent. However, many companies and individuals still struggle to understand the meaning of IP65, IP66, and similar protection levels, or the tests required to validate them. Today, let’s explore the relevant standards and shed light on the specifics of IP protection ratings.
The “6” indicates that the device has achieved the highest dustproof level. This means the device is entirely sealed against dust ingress, even against fine particles. Such a high level of dust protection is essential for ensuring long-term, stable operation, as dust and particles can damage internal circuits, causing malfunctions or performance degradation.
The “8” signifies the highest waterproof rating. This means the device can withstand continuous immersion in water for a specified time without sustaining damage. Specifically, according to IEC 60529 test conditions, an IP68-rated device can endure immersion in at least 1 meter of water for over 30 minutes without water ingress. These tests are conducted under laboratory conditions, typically using clean water.
It is important to note, however, that an IP68 waterproof rating does not imply the device can be used indefinitely in all aquatic environments or at any depth without risk. In practical use, factors such as increased water pressure or temperature fluctuations can limit the device's waterproof performance. Moreover, exposure to seawater, chemicals, or other liquids may compromise the device's seals. Therefore, using an IP68-rated device in such conditions is not recommended.
Manufacturers typically indicate the IP rating in product manuals or on official websites to inform users about the device's protective capabilities. However, users should remember that dustproof and waterproof performance can diminish over time due to aging and wear on seals. Even if a device is rated IP68, it is advisable to avoid exposing it to potentially damaging environments whenever possible.
Finally, while IP68 provides a significant level of protection, it does not eliminate all risks. If the device suffers water damage or other issues, the manufacturer may not provide warranty service. Therefore, although an IP68 rating offers additional peace of mind, cautious use and proper maintenance remain the best ways to protect your investment.
